In an amazing interview with British newspaper the Guardian today, Liverpool goalkeeper Pepe Reina has declared that it is not realistic for the club to expect to win the Premier League title. The Spaniard was asked about the league question and gave his take on it. "Can we win the league? I think so, but there are other teams capable of winning it – Chelsea, Man Utd, Arsenal, Man City. We can’t set ourselves objectives. We all want to win the league but right now that’s not a realistic objective".
That Reina does not believe it is realistic for the Reds to be Premier League champions says much about the confidence within Anfield and a surprising resignation to missing out again. This is all the more surprising given a finish of 2nd last season and in particular the club’s performance against other members of the so called ‘big four’.
The Spanish keeper also spoke out on the financial situation at the club, believing it is further impeding their chances of success. "The buying power of clubs is very different. You can’t sign players if you don’t have the money, and if there is no money, that’s it." He also urged the club’s American owners to do all they could to make further funds available stating, "It would be good if the owners made an effort economically. It would be lovely if we found ourselves in a position where we can bring players in and build a squad that can compete with other sides. But it’s up to the owners to bring players in, not us."
