Txiki Begiristain has been quoted in Catalan daily Sport speaking about the club’s interest in Franck Ribery. The problem it appears was that Ribery was never actually for sale. The Barcelona sporting director said, "Ribery was never in the market, in fact, Bayern reinforced by signing Robben".
Barcelona did try for the Frenchman though and Begiristain explained how the first move came about. "We had perfect conditions to begin negotiations. When they came to play us in the Champions League, at dinner we asked about him, and they replied that they would not sell him. But, if there was any chance then we would be the first to know."
Ribery is expected to be a top target for Real Madrid next summer when, with a year less on his contract, it is unlikely Bayern will stand in his way. Given these comments from Begiristain it is likely that Barcelona will once again show an interest in the French wizard.
