Liverpool Confident Naming Rights Deal Can be Huge

Print for later?

Sunday, 8th November 2009

Liverpool co-owners George Gillett and Tom Hicks believe that a massive naming rights deal for the club’s potential new stadium could offset the cost of having to build it. The figure mentioned in British newspaper the Sunday Times, suggests that the Americans will be looking for a package worth £250M from any potential sponsor.

Gillett and Hicks are thought to have been encouraged by the massive stadium naming deal signed by the New York Mets baseball team and Citibank, which saw the American franchise net €20M per year for 20 years. Hicks was quoted in the Sunday Times as saying: "Naming rights are a global market. We will most likely partner up with someone wanting global branding." Hicks is confident that as football is followed worldwide, a huge deal can be done.

Should Liverpool’s owners be successful in concluding such a deal then it could well contribute as much as 50% of the total cost of building the new ground.
