Thierry Henry: I Considered My International Retirement
Monday, 23rd November 2009
According to France Football, France captain Thierry Henry has admitted that he seriously considered retiring from international football after his side’s controversial victory over the Ireland to qualify for the World Cup. Henry, who was the centre of the handball debacle, conceded the media pressure, lack of support and negative attention directed at him was almost unbearable.
After the game, the French maestro revealed there was no support shown to him, not even from the French Federation. This feeling of abandonment, especially from those that he expected to back him, left the 32-year-old feeling a need for change.
Henry was quoted as saying, “Without the support of my family, I probably would not have had the same thought (opting not to retire). But I have decided, I will fight to the end, even if what just happened will be engraved in history.” Although many have lambasted the Frenchman for his actions, it seems Henry too, has been scarred by this unfortunate event.
