Arsenal’s Kieran Gibbs Sustains Broken Foot

Print for later?

Wednesday, 25th November 2009

Arsenal won 2-0 against Standard Liege in the Champions League yesterday to secure their place in the knockout stages, and Arsene Wenger is pleased to have got qualification out of the way, with the luxury of resting his key players in the final group game against Olympiacos. It wasn’t all positives for the Gunners however, defender Kieran Gibbs sustained a fractured metatarsal in his left foot and looks certain to be out for Sunday’s meeting against Chelsea.

Gibbs had just returned from a foot injury to face Standard Liege, and is now back on the sidelines for what could be an extended spell. Arsene Wenger told his club’s official website, "Gibbs has a big hole in his leg. It was a very bad challenge by the No 22 and it was not his first try, unfortunately. It doesn’t look good for Gibbs."

With Gael Clichy already out injured, Wenger will be forced to juggle his backline to cope with his latest injury woes. Almost certain to be fit for the match at the Emirates on Sunday though, are key duo William Gallas and Andrey Arshavin who are both expected to recover in time after picking up knocks in the win.
