Liverpool’s Rafael Benitez Not Going To Be Sacked
Wednesday, 25th November 2009
Despite winning 1-0 away to minnows Debrecen, courtesy of an early David N’gog goal, Liverpool have been dumped out of the Champions League after Florentina managed a win against Lyon. This latest blow to the Reds’ dismal season heaps more pressure on under-fire manager Rafael Benitez, although Liverpool managing director, Christian Purslow, has been quick to give his full support to the Spanish boss.
"This will have no bearing on Rafa whatsoever," Purslow said to The Guardian. "He signed a new five-year deal four months ago and in those terms he is four months into a five-year journey. You don’t deviate from long term plans for people and the way to take the club to the next level because of two late goals against Lyon, and that’s what it boils down to."
This sign of support will be a huge confidence booster for Benitez, who many feel could be near the end of a five-year Liverpool reign. With the club looking likely to face a real challenge to secure a Champions League spot this season though, support for the 49-year-old tactician could very well run out if things are not turned around very soon.
