Man Utd’s Gary Neville: Liverpool Deserve To Be Out

Print for later?

Friday, 27th November 2009

Outspoken Manchester United defender Gary Neville has stated Liverpool got what they deserved when they crashed out of the Champions League in midweek. With the rest of England’s “Big Four” already qualified, Neville insists Liverpool only have themselves to blame for their unenviable position.

Speaking to The Guardian, Neville said, “Well, you get what you deserve as a team, don’t you? We are where we are because we deserve to be there. And it is the same with Liverpool. We went out of the competition ourselves after the group stage a few years back [2005]. They haven’t performed well enough in the Champions League this season to get the results, as simple as that.”

Although such brash comments will be a difficult pill to swallow for Liverpool supporters, there is undoubtedly a truth behind such criticism. Rafael Benitez’s side managed a measly seven points from five games, and as a result, will have to shift their focus away from the competition they have played well in for so long. The Reds did however, manage to qualify for the Europa League, which could offer a chance for some much-needed silverware at Anfield.
