Man Utd’s Sir Alex Ferguson: Wes Brown Best Defender in The Country

Friday, 27th November 2009

Ahead of Manchester United’s trip to Fratton Park, Sir Alex Ferguson revealed in a pre-match press conference that his side will still be without defensive duo John O’Shea and Jonny Evans. Far from a crisis however, the 67-year-old Scot has plenty of cover for his backline, with Wes Brown impressive since returning from injury.

Our concerns still centre around John O’Shea and Jonny Evans,” Ferguson said. “They are both very doubtful for Saturday, But I’m really pleased with the form of Wes Brown and Nemanja Vidic. They’ve been fantastic in recent games." Brown, who missed most of last season after a magnificent 2007/08 campaign, has always been highly regarded by the Man Utd manager and was once again subject of much praise. “I reiterate my point that when Wes is fit he’s the best natural defender in the country,” Ferguson said.

There is also news of recovery from under-fire England defender Rio Ferdinand, who has been out with a nagging back injury. Although reports have circulated that the 31-year-old will be out until 2010, Ferguson indicates otherwise: “Rio is coming along. He is making progress but it’s difficult with back injuries. Nature sometimes helps you, and we are looking forward to him coming back.”
