Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger was left feeling aggrieved at his side’s 3-0 defeat at the hands of Premier League leaders Chelsea, after an Andrey Arshavin goal was disallowed early in the second half to dampen his team’s fight back. Undeserving to be 2-0 down at half-time, the French tactician knew an early goal after the interval was vital to get his gunners back into the game. His boys didn’t disappoint as Arshavin hit the back of the net after Chelsea goalkeeper Petr Cech spilled in the area, but referee Andre Marriner, barred the goal for an apparent foul in the buid-up.
Wenger was fuming as he told the Daily Mail, “The referee cancelled a goal and nobody understands why. What is he doing? I watched it five times and nobody touches Cech – he lets the ball down, we score and he (Marriner) cancels the goal."
This latest setback hands Wenger’s side their second successive defeat in the Premier League after losing 1-0 to Sunderland the week before. Arsenal are now fourth in the standings, 11 points adrift from leaders Chelsea, but with a game in-hand.
