With Robin van Persie confirmed to be out for an extended period of time, Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger may be forced to dip into the January transfer market as he attempts to bolster his side’s woeful attack. With no goals to speak of in the Premier League since Van Persie’s unfortunate ankle injury, which he picked up in an international friendly against Italy, Arsenal have lacked the killer instinct in front of goal.
Asked if the injury to the influential Dutch striker affected his plans for January, Wenger told The Guardian, “It has to because I didn’t feel we were in the need to buy anybody, but we will be out on the market, that is for sure. But we will only make a decision if it suits us.”
Dutch FA’s doctors had initially diagnosed Van Persie with a partial ligament tear, but further tests by Arsenal’s medical team revealed that the ligaments had been completely severed. The 26-year-old has been ruled out for virtually the entire domestic season, as he is expected to be out for five months. Bordeaux’s Marouane Chamakh has been tipped to be Wenger’s prime target.
