Lille Captain Mavuba Ecstatic after “Proud” Victory over Liverpool

Print for later?

Friday, 12th March 2010

Lille heaped more pressure on Liverpool by taking the advantage in the first leg of their Europa League round of 16 tie. Captain Rio Mavuba was clearly ecstatic to have managed a win over one of the continent’s most prestigious clubs.

"We’re very proud because we’ve beaten one of the biggest teams in Europe," he told UEFA.com after the impressive win. "It’s a good result, although it could have been even better had we scored a second at the end when [Pierre-Emerick] Aubameyang hit the post.”

Lille, who are currently sixth in Ligue 1, will travel to Anfield next week, looking to hold on to their slim advantage. Despite their seemingly unimpressive position in the domestic league, they are actually just four points away from leaders Bordeaux.
