Newcastle could be set to lose out on the season-long loan of Hatem Ben Arfa after Werder Bremen made a permanent bid to secure his services. The German side, who have just sold Mesut Ozil to Real Madrid, want to reinvest some of that cash in Ben Arfa.

According to reports from France Football, the Bundesliga giants have sent a bid of €8M to Marseille to buy Ben Arfa outright and this trumps Newcastle’s offer of a season-long loan followed by a possible €5.5M switch.

What Ben Arfa’s view on a switch to Werder Bremen is at this time is unknown, with the winger having pushed hard to get his loan move to the Premier League. Marseille would prefer to sell the 23-year-old, using the money brought in to boost their bid to buy a successor to Mamadou Niang.

Today will see Marseille’s board consider Werder Bremen’s bid and all the signs suggest they are likely to accept it, leaving the ball in Ben Arfa’s court.
