Liverpool’s new director of football strategy, Damien Comolli, is making eyes at Saint-Etienne striker Dimitri Payet according to reports from French paper Le Progres. Comolli knows all about the 23-year-old’s qualities, having previously worked at the Ligue 1 side before heading over to Anfield, and has seen Payet impress over the past 12 months and break through into the senior France national side.

Saint-Etienne however, are digging their heels in and remain adamant that Payet will not be going anywhere in the winter transfer window. They also denied that there has yet been any firm bid from Liverpool.

"Liverpool have not sought [Payet]", said Saint-Etienne chief executive Roland Romeyer. "If this is the the case [Liverpool’s interest], we have built a squad for the season. There will be no departures during the winter transfer window. Should there be movement, it would be the other way. Depending on injuries, for example, we could take a player. But this is only a hypothesis."

Given the Ligue 1 side’s position, it looks clear that they hope to keep hold of the striker until next summer at least. Whether this will put Liverpool off making a concrete bid in January though, remains to be seen, and with Comolli they have the highest of contacts within Saint-Etienne.
