Inter are interested in Atletico Madrid striker Diego Forlan following the news that the Uruguayan is available for €18M. Forlan, who was offered to Real Madrid at this price through an intermediary, is exactly what Nerazzurri boss Rafael Benitez feels he needs to rejuvenate the club’s season.

Benitez is keen to fill the gap left by the departure of Mario Balotelli to Manchester City in the summer and feels Forlan would add an extra dimension to his side. Given that Inter are struggling to assert their dominance in Serie A, there is every chance a move for the striker will be authorised by president Massimo Moratti.

However, there remains the possibility that Real Madrid may choose to swoop for Forlan, no doubt angering the supporters of their crosstown rivals. In Italy there is a belief that Mourinho will enjoy rivalling Benitez for Forlan’s signature and depriving the Spaniard of the striker who could boost the Nerazzuri’s campaign.
