Former Liverpool defender Mikel San Jose is interesting Barcelona, and it is interest the Athletic Bilbao star would welcome.
San Jose joined Athletic Bilbao on loan from Liverpool, having been taken to the Anfield club by former manager Rafael Benitez, Tipped for big things, the 21-year-old has developed quickly back in La Liga, so much so that the Catalan giants are now paying close attention to his progress.
Nevertheless, San Jose was surprised to hear Barcelona were monitoring him, initially refusing to believe it: "Me? I say I do not think so".
Told the Camp Nou side’s interest was very real however, San Jose commented to Basque newspaper El Correo: "If true it’s always good to talk about [the interest]. If it’s for the good [performances] all the better."
With Gabriel Milito expected to leave Barcelona in the summer, the Catalan club will have a vacancy in the defensive ranks, one San Jose could certainly fill, though Athletic Bilbao will not easily release him.
