Bundesliga outfit Wolfsburg are reportedly weighing up a bid for Liverpool defender Martin Skrtel as they seek to plan the shape of their side for next season.

The Volkswagen Arena club have suffered a disastrous campaign and recently sacked former England coach Steve McClaren, leading to a determination not to have a repeat in 2011/12.

Wolfsburg had tracked Skrtel’s Liverpool team-mate Daniel Agger for long periods of this season and had Kenny Dalglish not taken over at the Anfield club could even have bagged the Dane in January.

With Agger unavailable, Wolfsburg will now try for Skrtel with a bid of around £5M being their opening offer. Whether Liverpool are prepared to sell the Slovak stopper remains to be seen, but even were Skrtel to be made available then it is by no means certain that a switch to a mid-table Bundesliga side would appeal.
