Hamburg have targeted Arsenal striker Nicklas Bendtner for next season, having become resigned to losing Ruud van Nistelrooy in the summer.

The Bundesliga side blocked a proposed switch to Real Madrid for Van Nistelrooy in January, but now expect the Dutchman to leave at the end of the season, with Serie A side Lazio just one of many clubs showing a keen interest in the 34-year-old.

Thus Hamburg will need a replacement for Van Nistelrooy and Danish striker Bendtner is at the top of the list.

The 23-year-old has become unhappy that he is not a first choice pick at the Emirates Stadium and firmly believes with his ability he should be a regular under Arsene Wenger. Bendtner has already served noticed that should the situation remain unchanged, then he will be forced to assess his options in the summer.

"I am happy to remain [at Arsenal], but it is not certain that I remain, even after the summer", the Danish striker was quoted as saying earlier this month.

With AC Milan, Bayern Munich and Lazio all tracking the striker, Hamburg will need to move swiftly and convince Bendtner that succeeding Van Nistelrooy as the spearhead of their attack is the right career move.
