Premier League side Aston Villa may be without a permanent manager following the departure of Gerard Houllier last week, but the Birmingham-based club are not calling a halt to their summer transfer plans.

Following the route carefully laid down by the Frenchman, Villa have enquired about Real Madrid’s out-of-favour midfielder Fernando Gago.

According to Spanish radio station Cadena Ser, the English side have made discreet enquiries about the Argentine and are preparing to submit an offer in the next few weeks.

Gago has struggled with injuries at the Bernabeu and was expected to leave last summer, with Manchester City leading the chase for his services. But the 25-year-old was not keen on the proposed switch and opted to stay and fight for his place under Jose Mourinho.

That decision has not proven to be correct though, as the former Chelsea manager preferred Xabi Alonso and Sami Khedira in midfield, while this summer Los Blancos have already added two further players capable of operating in Gago’s slot – Nuri Sahin and Hamit Altintop.

With just seven appearances for Real Madrid last season, the former Boca Juniors wonderkid may well decide the time has come to leave the Spanish capital. Whether Villa will win what is sure to develop into a transfer chase as other clubs note his availability, remains to be seen.
