Real Madrid may try to keep Emmanuel Adebayor at the Bernabeu, but remain unwilling to pay the €16M demanded by Manchester City for his signature on a permanent basis.

Instead, the Spanish giants are preparing to sound Roberto Mancini’s side out about taking Argentine midfielder Fernando Gago as part of any deal. Such a move would bring down the cash amount needed for Adebayor, perhaps to as little as €5M.

The former Boca Juniors wonderkid has fallen out of favour at the Bernabeu and is no longer in Jose Mourinho’s plans. Gago seemed set for an exit last summer and indeed City counted themselves amongst the interested parties; no move away from the Spanish capital materialised though.

This summer too the 25-year-old is attracting attention from other clubs, with English duo Aston Villa and Liverpool revealed by Gago’s agent as having shown the most interest in the Argentine so far.

On his part, Adebayor is desperate to remain with Real Madrid and the Togo striker believes he put in a good shift for Los Blancos towards the end of the last campaign.

But while Mourinho has no objections to keeping the former Arsenal man, he will not see Real Madrid pay €16M to do so.
