Tottenham Hotspur look ready to rival Manchester United for the signature of Mexican talent Erick Torres.
The 18-year-old currently plays for the same club – CD Guadalajara – that Manchester United striker Javier Hernandez turned out for before being whisked to Old Trafford by Sir Alex Ferguson last summer. And earlier this month it was revealed that the United boss was considering repeating the trick with Torres.
However, this time Ferguson could face opposition from Harry Redknapp’s Spurs.
Redknapp is on the lookout for another striker to add to his squad, although budget constraints, which could only be alleviated by the big-money sale of an established star such as Luka Modric, have meant the former Portsmouth boss is keen on a bargain. And Torres could be it.
United’s scouts ran the rule over Torres at the esteemed Toulon Tournament, where Mexico finished fourth, and were delighted with what they saw. It seems Spurs too though were keeping a close eye on the 18-year-old though.
Nicknamed "El Cubo", The Cube, Torres has been tipped to follow in Hernandez’ footsteps and is the latest gem to roll off the CD Guadalajara production line.
The Mexican giants will hope a bidding war between United and Spurs ensues, although domestic opinion reasons Torres would be well served by remaining in Mexico for at least a further year.
