Newcastle United have failed with a €10M bid for Freiburg striker Papiss Cisse.

The Senegal hitman, who has been prolific in the Bundesliga and recently stated his desire to move to take his career to the next level, was targeted by the English Premier League club on Tuesday.

But the Magpies’ offer of €10M was deemed not good enough by Freiburg, who want at least €15M to even consider selling their most prized asset.

Now the German side intend to keep hold of Cisse with less than 24 hours to go before the transfer window closes; the club’s sporting director Dirk Dufner is concerned about not being able to replace the forward.

Newcastle could yet return with an improved offer for Cisse, a turn of events which would hand Freiburg a difficult decision, but the player himself would jump at a move.

"I want to leave", Cisse told SWR only last week.

"Yes, I have a contract, but I want to test myself at another level."
