French defender Eric Abidal has rejected a contract extension at Barcelona.

Abidal’s deal at the Camp Nou runs out at the end of the current season and the European Champions are keen to keep him at the club.

Indeed, the Frenchman is well respected at Barcelona and was roundly supported by the club last season when he was diagnosed with a tumour on his liver. The 31-year-old underwent surgery in March, but made a remarkable recovery to resume action against Real Madrid in the Champions League semi-final.

The former Lyon man was also handed the captain’s armband in the Champions League final victory over Manchester United, with the player lifting the trophy at Wembley.

There is no suggestion Abidal wants to leave Barcelona, but he is believed to be unhappy with both the salary and length of the contract on offer.

Negotiations between club and player are expected to resume well before Abidal’s contract expires.
