Sunderland are prepared to rival Arsenal for Norwegian striker Mohammed Abdellaoue in January.

Sources in Norway confirmed that the Gunners were known to be keeping a close eye on the 25-year-old goal-getter, with a view to mounting a bid when the transfer window reopens.

But Arsene Wenger will not have a free run at the Hannover 96 man, with Sunderland boss Steve Bruce also keen.

Abdellaoue was on the scoresheet for Norway in their recent international against Iceland, scoring the only goal in the Scandinavian encounter.

The Norway international’s stock looks set to rise throughout the current Bundesliga season as he has already developed a nose for goal, hitting the back of the net three times.

Sunderland are thought to be making plans for the eventuality that Ghana star Asamoah Gyan may leave in the winter window.

French club Marseille have confirmed that Gyan was offered in part-exchange for Andre-Pierre Gignac on transfer deadline day, but the 25-year-old did not wish to move to the Stadium of Light and a deal was derailed.

And talk has persisted that Gyan is unhappy at Sunderland.
