Sources in Spain have indicated that Villarreal are planning to sound out former Real Madrid star Raul over a potential move.

Raul currently plays for German side Schalke, though he was linked with a move throughout the summer and is not believed to enjoy the most comfortable of relationships with coach Ralf Rangnick.

Nevertheless, the 34-year-old is known to value his status amongst Schalke’s support and there has been talk of the Bundesliga outfit trying to extend a contract which expires at the end of the season.

Interest from Villarreal though could complicate matters.

The Yellow Submarine are well capable of fighting near the top of La Liga and qualifying for the Champions League – a fact which means they are sure to interest Raul.

Despite losing Santi Cazorla to Malaga over the summer, Villarreal did manage to keep hold of the highly-rated Giuseppe Rossi, while Brazilian hitman Nilmar is also excelling.

Raul could well be excited by the prospect of returning home to join such a dangerous strikeforce.
