Juventus are bidding to beat Chelsea and Tottenham Hotspur to the signature of Gary Cahill.

The Bolton Wanderers centre back is out of contract at the Reebok Stadium next summer and widely expected to move on from Owen Coyle’s team in January for a knockdown fee.

Spurs, who almost closed a deal for the 25-year-old in January, are the keenest on his signature, and can be expected to return with a fresh bid when the winter window opens.

Chelsea too have been linked with the England international, with Andre Villas-Boas keen to use the time between now and the reopening of the transfer window to run the rule over the former Aston Villa man.

But opposition for Cahill’s signature looks set to come from Serie A as sources in Italy have indicated that Juventus are preparing a package to offer both Bolton and the player in January.

Despite adding a number of fresh faces throughout the summer, Bianconeri coach Antonio Conte is still keen to bring in another central defender.

And Cahill now looks Conte’s primary target, although the Juventus boss is prepared to switch his attention to FC Porto’s Rolando if his interest in the Bolton man leads to nothing.
