Villarreal have joined the chase for PSV Eindhoven’s Swedish striker Ola Toivonen.

Toivonen, whose father is Finnish, was snapped up by PSV in 2009 after the Dutch giants noticed his undoubted potential and goalscoring exploits in Sweden with Malmo.

The 25-year-old has already been amongst the goals this season, slotting home five in eight games and popping up on the Yellow Submarine’s radar.

English Premier League outfit Sunderland, also on the lookout for a striker, have been linked with the Swede.

And there is a urgency around the Black Cats’ pursuit of a new hitman given the club’s decision to allow Ghana striker Asamoah Gyan to head to the Middle East on a season-long loan.

PSV could well be open to parting with Toivonen, but would want to realise a substantial profit on the €4.5M they paid to Malmo.
