Lucho Gonzalez would be progressing under the tutorship of Arsene Wenger – that is the view of former Arsenal star Robert Pires, who has spoken out ahead of the Gunners’ trip to France to meet Marseille in the Champions League.

The Argentine, who currently turns out for Didier Deschamps’ men, came close to moving to the Emirates over the summer, but Arsenal could not agree a deal with the French side.

Gonzalez’ form has not been at the level which is expected so far this season and the 30-year-old has come in for criticism. With the ability at his disposal, the former FC Porto player is widely thought to be one of Ligue 1’s most talented players.

While Gonzalez will surely improve, Pires believes that the Argentine would become a better player under Wenger.

"When you’re under Wenger, you progress and you succeed", Pires told La Provence.

"He’d succeed and progress, like all the French players who arrived at Arsenal.

"The setting is ideal, the training centre, the participation in the Champions League.

"Tactically you work a lot. And Wenger makes you work on your qualities, he is perfect."
