Serie A giants Fiorentina are eyeing a swoop for Everton midfielder Marouane Fellaini.

La Viola are likely to sell Riccardo Montolivo for a knockdown fee in the January transfer window given the Italy international’s refusal to pen a contract extension at the club.

This will leave Fiorentina searching to bolster coach Sinisa Mihaljlovic’s midfield – and the 23-year-old Fellaini has piqued their interest.

Just as Fiorentina will be forced to part with Montolivo due to contract complications, so Everton could have to take any offer submitted by La Viola seriously given the status of Fellaini’s deal at Goodison Park.

The former Standard Liege man sees his contract with the Toffees run until 2013, but it looks unlikely he will agree to a new deal to stay with David Moyes’ men.

Everton could keep hold of Fellaini until next summer, but that will see the pressure to cash in cranked up and January may well represent the best time to sell the all-action midfielder.

Moyes would receive a lucrative fee from Fiorentina and in the process ensure that Fellaini was sold to a club outside of England – a move Everton’s fans would be more willing to accept.

Financial considerations at Goodison Park would also appear to point to a January sale.
