Liverpool look set to face opposition in their bid to snap up Bologna midfielder Gaston Ramirez after Barcelona and Real Madrid began to run the rule over the 20-year-old.

The young Uruguayan has been targeted by Kenny Dalglish’s side, talk which has left the Rossoblu scrambling to sign him to an extended contract – though the Italians accept this is unlikely to put off potential suitors and should simply serve to ensure a larger fee is received.

On the table for Ramirez is an increase in salary from €275,000 per year to €800,000. A buy-out clause of between €13M and €15M will also be inserted – well within Liverpool’s reach.

But now Spanish football’s two biggest clubs have appeared on the scene and, should either Barcelona or Real Madrid decide Ramirez is a star of the future, then Liverpool will face tough competition for his signature.

Ramirez has already been watched by scouts from the Camp Nou and the Bernabeu and will remain under close inspection over the next two months.

Liverpool though are thought to need no further convincing and believe the attacking midfielder would make a perfect addition to their budding collection of Uruguayan stars.

For Ramirez too the presence of Luis Suarez and Sebastian Coates at Anfield should sweeten any deal.

But saying ‘no’ to Josep Guardiola or Jose Mourinho could prove equally as impossible for the 20-year-old.
