Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has played down comments he made to French sports magazine L’Equipe which suggested the current season may be his last at the Emirates.

Wenger had appeared to hint that he could stand down as manager at the end of the campaign and was presently building a solid foundation for his successor to inherit.

But the Frenchman has claimed this not to be the case, pointing out his discussion with L’Equipe was from a different standpoint.

"It was a conversation about if I did not do well enough"
, Wenger told Sky Sports after his side’s 2-1 win over Norwich.

"I said that’s the only way I would consider, if I was below what is expected at the club.

"[Arsenal is] the club of my life and I’m completely committed to my contract.

"On my side, I think I’ve always showed commitment to the club.

"At the start of the season, there were many people questioning what I do, but I was determined.

"I have to honestly rate the quality of my work at the end of the season and think ‘did I take the maximum amount out of the team’."
