Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has dismissed the possibility of the Gunners signing a new central defender in the January transfer window.

Wenger has been linked with Chelsea’s transfer listed centre back Alex, while Bolton Wanderers defender Gary Cahill, a player for whom the Frenchman has previously bid, is also expected to be available.

But after snapping up giant German Per Mertesacker, Wenger is not ready to sign another centre back.

"We will not be in the market for any centre back, I can assure you", said the Arsenal manager.

Mertesacker echoed Wenger’s comments, explaining that the real need is for full backs.

"We need more full backs I think!", said the former Werder Bremen stopper.

"It’s not good for the squad if so many full backs are injured, but what can I say?

"We have to manage the situation. We have had some bad situations with injuries in the last month but we managed quite well."
