Liverpool are ready to firm up their interest for Inter defender Cristian Chivu.

The versatile Romanian, who can operate in defence and midfield, will end his four-year association with the Nerazzurri in January, with his contract coming to an end in June and a sale for a knockdown fee on the agenda.

Chivu is attracting significant attention from some of Europe’s biggest clubs with Ajax, Real Madrid and Tottenham Hotspur all having taken steps to find out on what conditions the 31-year-old can be snapped up.

Liverpool too hold an interest and with the January transfer window approaching, must decide what terms to offer Chivu.

Reds boss Kenny Dalglish is believed to rate the former Ajax centre back highly and could even opt to deploy him as a holding midfielder, filling in for the absent Brazilian Lucas, who is sidelined through injury.

The battle for the Romanian looks set to be fierce, with Ajax having earmarked Chivu as a replacement for captain Jan Vertonghen, while Real Madrid manager Jose Mourinho is well aware of the player’s qualities from his time in Italy.

Spurs too, under Harry Redknapp, are alive to the potential acquisition of a hugely experienced performer.

Dalglish however would dearly love to take Chivu to Anfield.
