Aston Villa are pondering making a move for Panathinaikos defender Jean-Alain Boumsong.

Villa boss Alex McLeish rates the Frenchman and believes he would bring experience and steel to the club’s backline – and vitally Boumsong could be available next month for the right price.

The centre back currently turns out for Greek giants Panathinaikos, but has solid experience of the cut and thrust of British football, having played for Rangers and Newcastle.

Indeed, McLeish worked with Boumsong when he managed Rangers and the tough-tackling former Lyon star is believed to be open to playing for the Scot once again.

Boumsong joined Panathinaikos from Lyon in the summer of 2010, inking a three-year deal with the Athens giants.

The 32-year-old has enjoyed a successful time in Greek football and is rated as one of the Super League’s most accomplished centre backs.

An offer from Aston Villa however could be too good for Boumsong to turn down, despite his regular first team spot and standing at a title-chasing side in Panathinaikos.
