Sources in Germany have confirmed that Bayern Munich are serious about making an attempt to take Dimitar Berbatov from Manchester United.

The Bavarians are planning for life without Ivica Olic, who should quit the Allianz Arena at the end of the season, if not before, and Berbatov is the club’s favoured option.

Any hopes of snapping up the 30-year-old for free in the summer were recently dashed however, when Manchester United boss Sir Alex Ferguson confirmed that he is planning to activate a clause in the Bulgarian’s contract which will extend his deal for a further year.

However, this move appears as much designed to protect the English champions’ investment in the former Tottenham Hotspur man as it is a vote of confidence over his role at Old Trafford.

A switch to Bayern Munich would undoubtedly be an attractive one for Berbatov, offering as it would a big payday and the chance to find regular first team football at one of Europe’s biggest clubs.

The striker has made just four starts in the Premier League this season, with a further five appearances from the bench; these forays have resulted in six league goals though as he has continued to demonstrate his potency when called upon.
