Manchester United are believed to be seriously considering a bid for Benfica’s Spanish midfielder Javi Garcia.

Garcia has been tracked on a regular basis by Sir Alex Ferguson’s men, but Spanish radio station Cadena Ser have reported a stepping up of that interest by the Red Devils.

The 24-year-old is a product of Real Madrid’s youth academy, but failed to make the grade at the Bernabeu and was shipped out to Osasuna in 2007.

He briefly returned to Los Blancos the next season before being sold to Benfica in 2009.

In Portugal, Garcia has blossomed and gone on the establish himself as a mainstay of the Lisbon giants.

A defensive midfielder, the Spaniard played a key role in Benfica’s title-winning season during his first campaign at the Estadio da Luz.

While Benfica will not be keen to part with Garcia, the 24-year-old is only under contract with the club until 2014, making 2012 the year his value will peak if a new deal is not inked.
