Daniele De Rossi’s new contract at Roma makes him the highest paid Italian in Serie A.
The midfielder’s contract was due to expire at the end of the current season and, had the 28-year-old allowed it to run out, he would have had offers from the biggest clubs in Europe.
But the Giallorossi pulled out all the stops to keep a player who is now an icon in the Italian capital, and looks set to pick up the mantle from Francesco Totti.
And De Rossi will be well rewarded for his efforts.
The new contract which the Azzurri star has inked, guarantees him the sum of €6.5M per year; that is €500,000 better than Juventus shot-stopper Gianluigi Buffon, who had been Serie A’s highest paid Italian – now that honour goes to De Rossi.
In overall terms however, the Roma man is still a little down the pay league behind Serie A’s top earner, Zlatan Ibrahimovic.
The AC Milan striker pockets a basic €9M per year with the Rossoneri.
