Sevilla have appointed former Real Madrid midfielder Michel as their new coach in succession to Marcelino, who was sacked yesterday.
Los Rojiblancos lost 2-1 at home to lowly Villarreal at the weekend, a result which left the side sitting down in 11th spot in La Liga, well short of their aim of a Champions League place.
After parting with Marcelino, Sevilla moved quickly, sounding out and then agreeing a deal with Michel, who was most recently in charge of Getafe.
The 48-year-old has agreed to sign a contract running until the end of the season, with the stipulation that if he is able to guide Sevilla into the top four this season, that will automatically be renewed until next June.
Michel enjoyed a long playing career with Real Madrid, appearing for Los Blancos between 1982 and 1996.
The former classy midfielder has long been touted as a potential Real Madrid coach, though took his first steps in the dugout with Rayo Vallecano before a spell with Real Madrid’s B team.
His last job was at Getafe, an appointment which lasted two years.
