Bayern Munich are running the rule over Montpellier defender Mapou Yanga-Mbiwa, according to sources in France.

The Bavarians are on the lookout for another central defender to bring in over the summer and the 22-year-old could be a potential candidate.

Yanga-Mbiwa has been in impressive form for Rene Girard’s side, who have turned into unlikely Ligue 1 title challengers this season.

Bayern Munich may face fierce opposition for the Montpellier youth team graduate however, with English Premier League giants Arsenal known to hold an interest, while Newcastle United have also looked at the player.

And with the south coast club’s captain having declared a liking for English football, Arsene Wenger’s Gunners would start with an advantage in any race.

For Montpellier, sourcing the highest possible fee for the defender will be their primary concern.

Yanga-Mbiwa is under contract at the Stade de la Mosson until 2013, meaning that the Ligue 1 side will be under pressure to cash in over the summer.
