Chelsea boss Andre Villas-Boas has insisted he is excited about the future, despite continuing speculation over his position as Blues manager.
Villas-Boas saw his side misfire again at the weekend, with just a 1-1 FA Cup draw against second tier side Birmingham City at Stamford Bridge – a result which means a replay will be needed.
The Portuguese has also presided over slippage in the Premier League, with Chelsea outside the Champions League qualification places at present.
Today’s clash against Napoli in the Champions League therefore has taken on even greater significance for the former FC Porto coach’s future.
Villas-Boas though has insisted that this is simply the first year of a three-year plan to completely transform Chelsea.
"We had a three-year project to change not only the team but the culture and the structure of the club", said the Portuguese.
"There is a lot we needed to do, a lot of plans", he added.
And striking a confident note about his continued employment at Stamford Bridge, Villas-Boas declared: "That is why I am excited about the future."
He did admit though that silverware is needed.
"Having said that, we have to build a team to win trophies. We are no longer in the Carling Cup and do not have a chance to win the title.
"But we are still confident we can do well in the Champions League and the FA Cup."
