Sources in Brazil have indicated that Flamengo are confident of snapping up veteran Italian forward Alessandro Del Piero.

The 37-year-old ended a long association with Juventus at the end of last season, signing off in style by helping Antonio Conte’s men to win the Serie A title.

Yet despite that seeming to provide the perfect backdrop to a respectable retirement, Del Piero wishes to play on for as many as two more years.

And with joining another club within Italy off the agenda, he is seeking a side abroad.

The Italian has been linked with a switch to the MLS, to Swiss side FC Sion, Argentine club River Plate and Japanese outfit Sanfrecce Hiroshima.

But Flamengo appear to be in pole position for Del Piero.

He could yet come up against another veteran who played in Serie A last season if he moves to South America, with Clarence Seedorf speculated to be making the move to Brazilian football.
