Despite Newcastle United sending a delegation to Enschede to open talks to sign FC Twente striker Luuk de Jong, Tukkers coach Steve McClaren has warned the English Premier League outfit that only "stupid money" will see the Dutchman leave.

Alan Pardew’s Magpies have already had a €10M bid for the 21-year-old knocked back, but quickly moved to increase that offer.

Now the English outfit have stepped up their interest still further by sending representatives to Holland in a bid to push through a deal – it is also believed Newcastle covet Twente defender Douglas.

On De Jong, McClaren is clear that he wants his prize striking asset to remain and only a very substantial offer will be enough to convince the Englishman of the need to sell.

Indeed, McClaren has his eyes on winning next season’s Eredivisie title and considers De Jong crucial to making that dream a reality.

"The club know what I think about it", said McClaren on the subject of Newcastle’s attempts to sign De Jong.

"Luuk de Jong would stay if it were up to me, unless stupid money is offered."

McClaren also believes that from a professional point of view it is too soon for the young forward to head abroad.

"Only since the winter of last season has Luuk been playing as a number 9.

"He must have at least one full season playing as a real striker to become a top player at a big club."

Newcastle are sure to appreciate however that, the longer De Jong remains with Twente and produces the goods, the higher his asking price will become.
