FC Twente have moved to finally see off interest in striker Luuk de Jong this summer by slapping a €20M asking price on the Dutchman’s head.

De Jong has been the subject of bids from Borussia Monchengladbach and Newcastle United, with the latter offering as much as €14M.

In what was a surprising development, the Tukkers quickly turned that down, despite it being markedly close to the €15M they had been widely believed to want to release the 21-year-old.

Twente have never been keen on the idea of selling De Jong this summer; club coach Steve McClaren has urged the Holland international to spend at least one more season in the Eredivisie before departing for a bigger league.

De Jong’s agent has suggested his client feels ready to take the next step and play abroad, but ultimately the decision lies with Twente and, the player’s representative appreciates an asking price of €20M will most likely block a move this summer.

For Twente chairman Joop Munsterman, the "absurd" amount spoken as being needed to sign De Jong by coach McClaren is €20M.

"For €15M, De Jong will not leave", Munsterman told De Telegraaf.

"De Jong has his contract and he was fine when he signed it", added the Twente supremo.
