Lille full back Mathieu Debuchy has been advised that joining English Premier League outfit Newcastle United would be a smart move.

Debuchy has been the subject of a €5M bid from the Magpies this summer, though Lille want more money and time to line up a replacement, before selling the Frenchman.

And if Debuchy does have the opportunity to land at St. James’ Park, it is one he should take in the view of former France international Robert Pires.

Pires played in England with Arsenal and Aston Villa, and so is very accustomed to life in the hustle and bustle of the Premier League.

"He has a game which really suits the Premier League with his speed. He also has such an attacking game, but is very aggressive in defence", Pires told Le 10 Sport.

"If I have any advice to give him, it would be to try his luck in England.

"It does not really surprise me that English clubs are interested in him. Newcastle would be a very good club for him because he would find his friends [Yohan] Cabaye and Hatem Ben Arfa.

"Also, they are one of the top English clubs, with a history and a beautiful stadium. For him and the rest of his career, they would be a nice stepping stone."

It remains to be seen if Debuchy will end up at St. James’ Park, but if Newcastle are to sign the French defender they will need to significantly improve on their €5M bid.
