Shakhtar Donetsk have kicked off the new Ukrainian season by beating Metalurh Donetsk 2-0 in the Ukrainian Super Cup.
The traditional season-opener took place in Luhansk and it did not take long for double winners Shakhtar to put their city rivals to the sword.
Last season Shakhtar had needed extra-time to see off Metalurh in the country’s cup final, but on this occasion the contest was settled in normal time.
Two first half goals ensured that the match was quickly over as a contest as Luiz Adriano (6th minute) and Douglas Costa (35th minute), found the back of the net.
Matters got worse for Metalurh near the end of the match as defender Oleksandr Volovyk saw red.
The victory will be a boost for Shakhtar heading into the opening round of Ukrainian Premier League matches at the weekend.
