Young Spanish midfielder Javi Martinez has rebuffed Barcelona’s interest in him and stated that his immediate future lies with his current club Athletic Bilbao.

According to sources in Spain, Barcelona coach Tito Vilanova has earmarked Martinez as a replacement for the already departed Seydou Keita and even made arrangements to offload a number of players to finance a deal.

However, the 23-year-old defensive midfielder has surprised Blaugrana officials by snubbing their interest in him and by stating his desire to continue playing at Los Leones until the end of his contract.

“I do not see myself playing at Barcelona”, stated Martinez clearly.

“I like playing at Athletic Bilbao. And I see myself at Athletic until the end of my contract which runs to 2016”, commented the Spanish midfielder to Antena 3.

Barcelona will have to revise their transfer strategy this summer after the young Spanish midfielder’s statement.

The Cules had planned to offload Ibrahim Afellay and Adriano in order to beef up their transfer budget to around €40M, which would have been enough to strike a deal with Athletic Bilbao.

However, now Vilanova will have to rethink his plans and move on to other transfer targets in order to strengthen the Barcelona squad.
