Jose Mourinho is preparing to convert Lassana Diarra into a right-back.

The Real Madrid boss has been scouring the transfer market for a player who can provide competition for Alvaro Arbeloa, with Maicon, Lukasz Piszczek, Branislav Ivanovic and Jose Bosingwa all considered in the corridors of power at the Bernabeu.

However, Mourinho has not been sufficiently convinced to sign any of the foremost contenders and instead believes he has an answer closer to home.

French defensive midfielder Diarra has been concerned about his lack of playing time with Los Blancos and has been linked with the exit door this summer.

Mourinho believes he can meet those concerns and also address a yawning need in his squad by moving the former Arsenal player to a full-back role.

Diarra has exceptional stamina and a relentless desire to win the ball, which the Real Madrid boss feels confident can lend itself to the right-back position.

The 27-year-old is likely to be given the chance to impress in this position, if he agrees to the change of role, in pre-season.
