Rubin Kazan won the Russian Supercup yesterday, beating champions Zenit St. Petersburg in the traditional season-opener.

Kurban Berdyev’s men beat Dynamo Moscow 1-0 in the final of the Russian Cup in May to set up the clash with Luciano Spalletti’s all-conquering Zenit side.

And the Rubin Kazan coach will have been encouraged by what he saw on the pitch as his team secured the Supercup.

Italian defender Salvatore Bocchetti opened the scoring in the 20th minute before forward Vladimir Dyadyun added a second in the 38th minute.

Rubin Kazan therefore headed into the break with a comfortable 2-0 lead.

It was a deficit that Zenit could not reduce and Rubin Kazan pick up the first silverware of the 2012/13 Russian campaign.
