Anderlecht defender Cheikhou Kouyate is on the radar of Newcastle United, who are set to watch the young Senegal star closely at the 2012 London Olympic Games. And with positive performances, Kouyate may well be heading to St. James’ Park this summer.

The Magpies are very interested in the central defender, according to sources in Belgium, and are keeping close tabs on the player.

Alan Pardew’s men have been presented with a great opportunity to have a closer look at Kouyate this summer and are set to see him play in competitive action for the Senegal Olympic team.

Newcastle are waiting with baited breath to watch the player perform in the Games before deciding whether or not to follow up their interest with a concrete bid.

The 22-year-old has garnered admiring looks from other English sides over the last 12 months, with Premier League giants Arsenal and Manchester City paying close attention to his progress in the Belgian top flight.

It is interest Kouyate knows all about. Indeed, the Senegal man even admitted in March that he felt he was not ready to join Manchester City. He may view Newcastle as offering more of a learning curve however.

The defender turns out for Anderlecht in the Jupiler Pro League, having joined the side from Brussels in 2007. He has clocked up nearly 100 league games in the Belgian top flight.

The 6ft 4in defender will form an integral part of the Senegal team which has been placed in Group A alongside Great Britain, the United Arab Emirates and Uruguay at the Olympics.

Even though Senegal will not play any of their group matches at St. James’ Park, Newcastle’s scouts will only have to travel to Old Trafford, the Ricoh Arena and Wembley to watch the young central defender in action.
