Borussia Monchengladbach have won the race for Dutch striker Luuk de Jong and snapped up the 21-year-old for a fee of €15M.

De Jong becomes FC Twente’s record sale, ahead of Bryan Ruiz, who was sold to Fulham last summer for €12M.

The Tukkers are disappointed to lose the striker and there was no financial need for Steve McClaren’s side to sell the player after already seeing winger Ola John join Benfica for €9M earlier this summer.

De Jong attracted two bids from English Premier League side Newcastle United, with a €14M offer being knocked back as Twente slapped a €20M asking price on the starlet.

However, as Gladbach stepped up the chase and became De Jong’s favoured destination, the chances of keeping the player, who became increasingly outspoken about his desire to leave, faded.

Now Twente are pushing ahead with plans to sign former Feyenoord hitman Luc Castaignos as a replacement.

Castaignos currently turns out for Italian giants Inter, but has struggled for playing time in Milan and has been made available for transfer.
