FC Twente defender Douglas has denied being on the verge of signing for English Premier League outfit Newcastle United.

Douglas has been heavily linked with a switch to St. James’ Park and is known to be on the Magpies’ radar.

Newcastle were looking to snap up the Brazilian along with striker Luuk de Jong, but the latter has joined Borussia Monchengladbach for €15M after the Magpies had a €14M bid rejected.

An interest in Douglas remains however and it has been widely speculated that it is only a matter of time until the 24-year-old, who is also a Dutch citizen, joins Alan Pardew’s men, with further talk that a bid for his services has already been submitted.

But the defender has insisted that reading of events is wide of the mark.

"I and my agent know nothing of a bid from Newcastle", Douglas told TC Tubantia.

"I want to stay at Twente this season", added the stopper.

The Tukkers rate Douglas as one of the finest central defenders in the Eredivisie and are not keen to lose him this summer.

Financially too the Dutch side have no need to cash in, putting the ball very much in Newcastle’s court to make an extremely attractive offer for the player.
